Christian hermeneutical methodology typically only considers the most literal, simplistic meaning of text. Whenever this method causes them difficulties, they tend to spiritualize the meaning, falling back on their origins in pagan mythology. All historical and cultural context is lost in this method, and the meaning is whatever they want it to be. “Only spiritual people can understand spiritual things” is their mantra, idolatry and heresies is their lot.
Greek hermeneutics- a loose Babylonian-Greco-Roman system of interpretation:
- text works on two levels only- literal and allegorical- and never both at the same time
- text is @ 75% creative imagination and @ 25% truth
- this system is largely open to interpretation of the reader, based on his experiences and desires
Etymology of the word hermeneutics- the word originates with the mythological Greek deity Hermes- messenger of the gods, mediator between the gods and humanity, inventor of language and speech, an interpreter, and a notorious liar. Socrates noted words have the power to reveal or conceal, thus ambiguously promoting the message. The Greek view of hermeneutics is that any spiritual document is a living text, completely open to interpretation; the truth subject to the whim of the reader or storyteller.
For about the last two and one half millennia (since Alexander), the guardianship and interpretation of Scripture has largely fallen to the same Babylonian-Greco-Roman system that is infused with paganism and open to interpretation. The “philosophies of the gods” permeates our religions, society and academia. “Men of renown” (Gen 6:4, Eze 23:23) save the day in books and movies with superhuman effort. Countless billions are spent on research into the true origins of myths, paranormal phenomenon, or the existence of parallel universes. Yet these same researchers who acknowledge the existence of infinite parallel universes and “ghosts” deny any possibility of one spiritual universe coexisting with our physical world if it includes the One true God.
Oddly, the origin of almost every ancient myth has one source- Scripture. The small thread of truth that makes the lie plausible is because myths are ha satan’s perverted attempts to institute counter covenants with men, place himself on the throne and usurp the worship due only to God. Myths are ha’satan’s’ rewrite of Biblical history.
- most cultures, even those isolated until recently, have stories of the flood
--- only one exalts the One God of Israel in the “tale”, or tells of the true reason for the event
- most historical myths have a creator-god who made the physical world; all but one tell of the demise or overthrow of that god, usually by his son
--- in Egypt, Ra was creator, grew old and feeble and was supplanted by his son Shu
--- the Titan Prometheus was creator to the Greeks, supplanted by Zeus
- Prometheus created man by mixing clay and water
- the “all father god” of the Norse, Odin, willingly sacrificed himself on Yggdrasil, the “world tree”, which they also worshiped
These gods have always demanded worship; without which they ignore us in times of trouble- or worse, curse us. To in any way invite these gods into or lives is to submit to their authority, and to their judgment. God’s condemnation of in any way submitting to these perverse beings or their belief systems and practices is absolute and unequivocal- they are divinations and witchcraft, abominations. Exodus 22:18 gives the sentence for such practices- death. (2Ki 21:6, 2Ch 33:6, Rev 18:23, 1Sa 15:23, Col 3:5, Deu 18:10, Deu 18:14, Gen 6:4)
In short, the reason historians, scientists, and even theologians are able to question the truth of Scripture is that our modern lives and education, and even our Christian beliefs, are saturated with Greek hermeneutical thinking. The truth is that the so-called experts who say the ancient Hebrews were simple minded are themselves too simple to understand the complex nature of Gods’ Word as recorded by the Hebrews. And anyone who believes that any of what God said is open to interpretation without the rules of proper hermeneutics is not led of the Spirit, without whom understanding is impossible. (Deu 32:28, 1Ch 22:12, Job 12:13, Job 18:2, Eph 4:18, 2Ti 2:7, Pro 21:30, Isa 40:14 )
Theirs is but the latest effort by ha satan to rewrite Scripture, this time by placing it on par with the myths he himself has created and making it open to personal interpretation. In our modern understanding this would make Scripture a lie.
The final point on Greek hermeneutical thinking in the modern church age is that we interpret the “New Testament” (Renewed Covenant) according to what we think (want) it to say; then try and interpret the Old Testament (TNK) based on how we “understand” these new Scriptures. How can this be? There must have been hundreds of letters circulated between churches in the 1st century CE, as well as many claiming to be true apostles. How did they know what was right and what was false?
Remember the Bereans- the Jewish believers in Acts 17:11? They were praised for eagerly accepting the Word, and examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. What Scriptures? The Scriptures of the Renewed Covenant were not yet compiled or canonized. They were, in fact, still being written! The only explanation is they did what Jews always do- they went to the for answers. They checked what was said against the and if it contradicted in any way what was said there, it was deemed false! The “New” may explain and/or fulfill the “Old”, but it can never contradict it. The “Old” is the standard by which the “New” is interpreted. Always!

Note: I am placing this here because the interpolation of the Hebrew B'rit Chadasha into koine Greek is a major part of the thinking and application of the mythological model to the Word of God!
